Taxonomy: f. Plasmodidae
Animal: Plasmodium vivax 4 03.jpg
Sites: Blood
Comment:
Plasmodium vivax trophozites in thin film - note very young ring forms including a ring with 2 chromatin dots. Double chromatin dots are more common with P.falciparum but can occur with P.vivax infections. Only young ring forms may be present in the blood in the early part of the cycle ie 0-12 hours in a 44-48 hour cycle so it may be difficult to diagnose, although rings are generally larger than those of P.falciparum. If there are very few rings, one can't exclude P.falciparum infection or a mixed infection, repeat blood examination 12 hours later may assist in diagnosis as older stages may be present then.
